Why build a city and not just a small commune?

People like living in cities because of the convenience, everything is close-by. Including friends, food, work, ….

But, cities are inherently unsustainable the way they're build today. They're a major contributor to climate change, and more than that, they alienate people from nature.

A modern city does not take into account food requirements for their citizens, so agriculture is outsourced. Which, in turn, causes CO2 emissions for transport and a severe excess of produce which is discarded. Waste disposal is a potential catastrophe for the environment.
